  • Exhibition Print - Fungi
Photographer: Hayley May On my way out of the Valley I stopped to watch a Kaka. Looking around I noticed some fungi growing up the length of a tree trunk. I placed my camera on the ground pointing up and took a couple of shots. This was my last photo of the day.

  • Exhibition Print - Robin in the woods
Photographer: Framing the Wild The best compositions in wildlife photography are created at the eye level of an animal which helps create connection in the photograph. This often requires getting down and dirty like I did during this special moment. This is a photograph of a very well known little companion guiding keen explorers through the primeval forest of Zealandia.

Photographer: Vandy Pollard Kawau tūī/little black shag foraging in the lower lake at Zealandia. Kawau tūī have a conservation status of naturally uncommon and are endemic to New Zealand. There are 36 species of shag worldwide. Twelve of these are found in NZ, of which eight are endemic. Four species of shag are found at Zealandia, however the kawau tūī is the only shag species that doesn’t breed there. Up to 60 kawau tūī can be observed roosting in Winter at Zealandia.

  • Exhibition Print - Kererū
Photographer: Rachel Herbert This photo was taken on the Valley View Track. I hadn’t been at Zealandia long when I turned around and saw this beautiful kererū watching me. It was so still and so close, sitting in a pool of dappled light. We spent several minutes sussing each other out before it clumsily flew away in typical kererū fashion.

  • Exhibition Print - Kākāriki Portrait
Photographer: Charlotte Laurent This photo was taken near the upper kākā feeders. It is the only time I’ve seen a Kākāriki up close! The lighting was just right and I love that it looks like they’re posing for a portrait. Unframed Photography Print.

  • Exhibition Print - Korimako
Photographer: T M Davidson I find korimako to be one of the more difficult birds to photograph in the sanctuary as they’re quick, don’t let you get too close, and spend most of their time in areas where the lighting is pretty bad. I got very lucky with this shot as it chose to land on the only branch that wasn’t in shadow, and I had the bonus of it just having had a meal so it’s beak was covered in beautiful bright blue pollen. • Exhibition Print - Rt. Hon. Kākā
Photographer: Astrid Authier-Hall This photo was taken by the upper kākā feeders. My son and I had a great time watching the kākā opening their feeders and then one kākā posed majestically after having a feed. I have altered the tone of the background foliage from bright green to a more analogous red/brown tone to tie in with the colouring of the kākā. Kākā are such great characters!
