These unique and reclusive creatures of the forest floor go by many names. Commonly known as velvet worms, and in New Zealand they are called Ngāokeoke, in more academic circles they are known as Peripatus or are referenced by their phylum name, Onychophora. But they are also often described as ‘living fossils’ as they are remarkably unchanged from 500 million years ago.

These beautiful ceramic Velvet Worms are made by Wellington potter, and Zealandia member, Sarah Randall.

  • Size in cm: approximately 12 long × 6 wide x 4 high
  • This piece has been designed to sit on a shelf or other flat surface, but it also has a built in strip across the back designed to fit over a standard picture hook so it can be hung on the wall.
  • Sold individually.
  • Due to the handmade nature of this piece, the item you receive may not exactly match the photograph.

This product is also available for purchase instore at Zealandia's gift shop.

These slimy native friends feed on algae and fungi – not your veges like those pesky introduced garden slugs!

These ceramic gherkin slugs have been lovingly handcrafted by Wellington local, Sarah Randall.

Hang your slug on the wall, or sit it on a shelf. Each slug measures approximately 10cm long.

Due to the handmade nature of these slugs, no two are the same and may not match the photograph exactly.
