Ceramic Putoko Ropiropi / Gherkin Slug
Ceramic Putoko Ropiropi / Gherkin Slug
Gherkin Slugs are a kind of leaf vein slug (Athoracophoridae) and the te reo name for this family, putoko ropiropi, refers to the distinctive leafy stripes found on many species of these slugs. Their english nickname comes from their resemblance to the bumpy texture and green hue of a gherkin.
These slimy native friends feed on algae and fungi – not your veges like those pesky introduced garden slugs!
These ceramic gherkin slugs have been lovingly handcrafted by Wellington local, Sarah Randall.
Hang your slug on the wall, or sit it on a shelf. Each slug measures approximately 10cm long.
Due to the handmade nature of these slugs, no two are the same and may not match the photograph exactly.
