Manawa Rewarewa Honey 500g
Manawa Rewarewa Honey 500g
The Rewarewa, an indigenous honeysuckle tree, grows in groves in well-lit parts of the forest of Te Urewera, and stands above the forest shrubbery as a fine tree of up to 30 metres in height. The flowers are clustered together on stalks with about 50-80 flowers in each cluster. The flower is designed for pollination by birds such as kōkō (the Tūhoe name for tūī) and bellbird, so it gives a bounty of nectar found by the bees and made into Manawa's delicious Rewarewa Honey.
Traditionally, the nectar of the Rewarewa tree was collected by Tūhoe ancestors for a sweetener as it contains about 45% sugars – a true honeysuckle! The inner bark was used for bandaging over wounds to check bleeding and help healing. Ongoing research has found that Rewarewa Honey has a range of healing properties, from antibacterial to anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effect. It is known to have the highest peroxide activity of NZ honey which helps in healing and fighting bacteria.
Use Manawa Rewarewa Honey daily, straight from the jar, or in tonic drinks. Rewarewa Honey is especially favoured by chefs for use in savoury and dessert dishes to create culinary delights!
Manawa Honey NZ was founded by the Tūhoe Tuawhenua Trust which holds 9000 hectares of bush-clad lands in the remote Te Urewera region of New Zealand's North Island. The Tūhoe tribe's aim is to sustainably manage the land and resources of their region for the benefit of current and future generations. Manawa Honey NZ is part of a programme of developing enterprises that create jobs for the Tūhoe people.
The Honeys of Te Urewera are all award winners – internationally as well as here in New Zealand. Rewarewa won Black Jar International Honey Tasting Contest, USA and so gained the mantle of the Best Tasting Honey in the World; also silver at the London Honey Awards and NZ Outstanding Food Producers Awards
